Case Study (Mandurah Baptist College)
Mandurah Baptist College initially engaged Safety Solutions WA (SSWA) to perform external WHS audits every two years at the College premises. Services also include delivering targeted staff training or WHS presentations during Staff Professional Learning days. More recently SSWA were engaged for an extended period to deliver consultancy services to assist the College with its WHS improvement program.
When performing WHS audits, the SSWA consultant would normally spend a day onsite, performing a WHS Compliance audit against the current WA Legislative framework. Access is provided to all staff and areas within the College and includes observations of activities being undertaken. The provided Audit Report includes compliance ratings for the various WHS obligations, including suggested corrective actions and photographic evidence. The SSWA Audit report would be tabled at the next Board meeting and be accompanied by the College’s completed Action Plan for areas identified by the audit.
SSWA delivered various WHS staff training sessions and presentations, covering topics such as the changes to the WHS Legislation; Manual Handling; Managing Chemicals and Hazardous Substances; Contractors and Managing Contractors. This included on-the-job training, mentoring and coaching of staff responsible for various internal WHS activities.
SSWA was engaged as consultants for an extended period to provide both on and off-site WHS services alongside key College staff to guide and assist with the design, development and implementation of forms, checklists, processes, etc. identified through the College’s WHS Improvement program. This included the review of policies, safety management documentation and the operation of the College’s WHS Committee. The consultant assisted in research of best practice models for specific work areas or activities undertaken by workers and provided advice accordingly.
The combination of services rendered by SSWA, enabled the College to effectively implement its WHS Improvement Program and created an awareness of WHS and culture of safety at the College. WHS is integral part of governance, policies and procedures, risk management, training, systems and processes. Staff and workers actively engage in WHS initiatives and take their WHS responsibilities seriously.
The College has journeyed with SSWA for several years and developed a respectful trusted relationship. SSWA consultants are always approachable, professional, knowledgeable and supportive.
Recommendations were always made in consultation with the College and SSWA was very effective in taking the College’s culture and work systems into consideration in their reviews and evaluation of WHS practices in place.
